Cataract Surgery Co-Management Q & A
The word “cataracts” describes a condition where the eye’s natural lenses become cloudy and yellowed, often as part of the aging process, but also commonly as a result of diabetes, injury, prolonged use of corticosteroids or radiation therapy. Located behind the cornea and iris and in front of the retina, the lens helps focus light on the retina, enabling clear images to be formed. Cataracts develop when protein in the lenses begins to form clumps that eventually cause clouding and prevent light from reaching the retina. They can occur in just one eye or in both eyes. Rarely, cataracts may occur in infants or children as a result of infection during pregnancy or metabolic diseases.
The doctors at San Diego Vision Care Optometry works closely with their patients who need cataract surgery to help them understand the procedure and their options, including the differences among intraoperative lenses (IOLs) used to replace their own natural lenses that have become clouded. The doctors work hard to establish long-term relationships with their patients, and providing preoperative guidance in a familiar setting can help men and women feel more comfortable about their upcoming surgery. Plus, they can refer patients to local ophthalmologists who perform the procedure.
Our providers hels patients understand the steps they need to take for proper healing, following up after surgery and even getting in touch with the surgeon with additional concerns you may have. As part of your cataract surgery team, they will provide skilled guidance so patients feel confident in their outcomes.
